External Beam Treatment

Image-Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT)

Image-guided radiation therapy incorporates state of the art technology in the delivery of radiation treatment.. During your treatment the radiation therapists will obtain two or three dimensional imaging such as x-rays or special CT scans. This 2D or 3D imaging is then used to ensure accurate and precise radiation treatment. Your doctor and treatment team are able to make adjustments to you position if needed. IGRT allows us to account for variation in positioning from breathing, motion, and daily variation. As an added benefit, your physician can monitor treatment progress and provided feedback regarding treatment response in real-time on a daily basis.

Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT)

Intensity modulated radiation treatment is cutting edge technology that delivers very precise treatment; carving the tumor away from normal tissues in the area. Specialized linear accelerators use IGRT and multiple varying intensity radiation beams to create a personalized plan that maximizes the dose to the tumor while minimizing the dose to normal tissues in the area. This type of treatment has been shown to reduce side effects during and after any radiation treatment program.

RapidArc® Radiotherapy Technology

RapidArc® is a form of IMRT the delivers conformal and exact treatment. This form of technology allows superior coverage of the tumor while allowing for greater sparing of normal/healthy structures and decreasing treatment times. Traditional IMRT is delivered in multiple fields while the machine moves to different treatment angles, starting and stopping each time. The RapidArc® system allows for the treatment of the entire tumor volume with arcs that span the body in 360 degree rotation. This fluid motion significantly decreases the treatment time.
